The Kufunda Woman

I've been in Zimbabwe for four weeks, and three of them have been in Kufunda, where I have been following the woman's work and wanna share my experience with you, so you can also have a sense of what I have been experiencing and help if you can and want to.

As far as I could see, in Zimbabwe there's almost no space for women to be and to freely express themselves. Throughout time most of them have been learning to be submissive to man and this has lead to many negative consequences in the culture and specially for the women in the rural areas, in my opinion.

And in Kufunda there is a women's movement starting to happen towards changing that situation. The women are gathering together in circle to talk about themselves, to share their lives, questions, fears and hopes and also to discover their talents and produce things together to sell and help to sustain their families.

The women I've meet are doing an amazing work within themselves and making a difference not only in their lives and families, but also taking a courageous step towards change in the women situation in the country, through example and action.

The group is mainly making natural jewelry out of seeds and wood, you can see some pictures bellow. They are finding their way to sell them in the country, but have been sending them abroad through friends that visit here. And to improve their work they need to get more tools. So if you can help in anyway disseminating the work, finding opportunities to sell the jewelry, or helping with the tools, it will be most welcome. I'm listing the tools they still need bellow and also attaching a picture where you can see some of the work.

If you wanna know more about Kufunda's work in Zimbabwe, the website is kufunda.wordpress.com. There you can also find link where you can help financially if you want to.

The tools needed for the women's group are:
4 round nose pliers - around US$ 10 each
4 wire cutters - around US$ 10 each
4 crimpers - around US$ 10 each
4 flat nose pliers - around US$ 10 each
1 rock tumbler - around US$ 300
1 jewellery drill (220v)- around US$ 60

Kindly,
Narjara
